A bank agent has been caught on video allegedly abusing and harassing an elderly woman over an outstanding debt of GH¢800, sparking widespread outrage and renewed scrutiny of debt recovery practices in Ghana.
Footage circulating online shows the agent gripping the woman by the arm as she appears to resist, with an onlooker filming the confrontation questioning aloud, “So is it right for a bank agent to abuse and harass an old woman like this?
Just because she is owning them an amount of 800 cedis.” The clip has drawn strong condemnation online, with many describing the treatment as excessive and disproportionate given the relatively modest sum involved.
The incident adds to a growing pattern of viral confrontations involving microfinance and loan recovery agents in Ghana in recent months, several of which have resulted in suspensions and police investigations after videos showed agents allegedly manhandling debtors, seizing phones, or resorting to physical force during debt collection visits.
In some previous cases, companies have publicly condemned the conduct of their own staff and handed them over to police once footage went viral.
The identity of the bank or financial institution involved, along with the elderly woman’s condition following the incident, has not been independently confirmed.
