The death toll from the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has risen to 2,011, according to health authorities.

Authorities said 4,381 confirmed cases have been recorded across five provinces, making the outbreak one of the fastest-growing Ebola outbreaks ever recorded.

The outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, was officially declared in May 2026.

The strain has no approved vaccine or specific treatment, according to the World Health Organisation.

The latest figures put the outbreak close to the DRC’s deadliest Ebola outbreak, recorded between 2018 and 2020, when nearly 2,300 people died.

Health authorities and international partners are facing major challenges in containing the outbreak, including insecurity, limited healthcare infrastructure and difficulties detecting cases early.
