Former Ghanaian actor turned pastor, Timothy Bentum, has ignited debate among Christians after advising believers not to use their tithes to support sick people or meet charitable needs.
In a video from one of his church services, the founder of Timothy Bentum Ministries urged members of his congregation to treat their tithe as God’s portion and avoid diverting it for personal or humanitarian purposes.
“Why do you want to use God’s 10% to take care of a sick person? What happened to your 90%?” Pastor Bentum asked during the sermon.
According to him, Christians should remain faithful to the biblical principle of tithing and should not use difficult circumstances as a reason to redirect the portion they have dedicated to God.
While acknowledging the importance of helping those in need, the pastor insisted that such acts of generosity should come from the remaining 90 percent of a believer’s income, not from their tithe.
“If you want to help another person, it should come from your 90% and not the 10%,” he said.
Pastor Bentum, who rose to prominence as a Ghanaian actor before entering full-time ministry, has become known for his teachings on Christian living, faith, and financial stewardship.
His remarks have since sparked widespread reactions on social media, with some Christians agreeing that tithes should be reserved strictly for their intended purpose, while others argued that caring for the sick and helping the needy are equally important expressions of the Christian faith.
