The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (retd.), has commended Nigerian Army troops serving under Operation ATILEYIN ALAFIA II (OPAA II) in the Republic of Benin for what he described as their exemplary professionalism and commitment to regional peace and security.

The commendation came during a morale-boosting visit to the troops at Camp Togbin in Cotonou, where the minister, accompanied by senior defence officials, praised the contingent for projecting Nigeria positively throughout the peace support mission.

Addressing the troops, General Musa said their conduct had continued to reflect the discipline, resilience and professionalism associated with the Nigerian Armed Forces.

He also conveyed the goodwill message of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, noting that the President was pleased with the troops’ performance and appreciated their sacrifices.

“The President is particularly pleased with the troops’ exceptional performance and extends his warm greetings and appreciation to them for their sacrifices in promoting peace and strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin,” he said.

The minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening defence cooperation with the Republic of Benin, stressing that both countries would continue working together to tackle criminal activities along their shared borders.

According to him, sustained military collaboration remains essential to improving border security and ensuring lasting peace and stability across the sub-region.

General Musa also wished the troops a safe return to Nigeria at the completion of their assignment and urged them to remain committed to the core values of the Nigerian Army wherever they are deployed.

“While wishing the troops a safe journey back to Nigeria upon the successful completion of their mission, General Musa thanked them for their selfless service and urged them to remain steadfast in upholding the core values of the Nigerian Army wherever they may be called upon to serve,” the statement said.

The visit concluded with the presentation of a commemorative souvenir to the Minister of Defence by the Commanding Officer of Operation ATILEYIN ALAFIA II, Lieutenant Colonel A.A. Ikoro, in appreciation of his visit, encouragement and continued support for the troops.
