The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Rivers State for the 2027 election, Kingsley Ogundu Chinda, has renewed his commitment to restoring the state’s “Garden City” identity, drawing attention to his record of environmental initiatives as a former Commissioner for Environment.

Chinda, who currently represents Obio/Akpor Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, emerged as the APC’s governorship candidate in May 2026 ahead of the 2027 poll.

In a statement highlighting his environmental record, Chinda recalled initiatives introduced during his tenure as commissioner, including the Rivgreen Marshals, the Technical Committee on Environmental Sanitation, the Rivgreen Corporate Forum and Rivgreen Clubs established in schools across the state.

The initiatives focused on sanitation, waste management, environmental awareness, tree planting and the beautification of public spaces.

Chinda also promoted tree planting as part of efforts to improve the state’s environment and restore Port Harcourt’s reputation as Nigeria’s Garden City.

At a stakeholders’ meeting on June 4, 2009, he was quoted as saying:

“The RSMENV is putting up an emission legislation which when passed will become a law to regulate fumes.”

He also urged residents to take responsibility for greening the state, saying:

“If every person in Rivers State planted a tree then we would have planted 6 million trees.”

Chinda further called on residents to contribute to efforts to clean Port Harcourt.

“We should contribute to cleaning PH in order to return it to the Garden City status.”

His campaign is now presenting the environmental record as part of the platform on which he intends to contest the 2027 governorship election, with the message that his experience in environmental management could inform his approach to urban sanitation, greening and public-space development.

The APC candidate’s environmental agenda includes promoting responsible waste management, tree planting, environmental education and cleaner public spaces across Rivers State.

The campaign says the objective is to revive the state’s Garden City identity while creating a cleaner and more liveable environment.

The message underpinning the campaign is: “With O. K. Chinda, our environment will be OK.”

“OK IS OKAY!”
