China and Nigeria have signed a protocol on inspection and quarantine requirements for wild aquatic products exported from Nigeria to China, in a move expected to strengthen agricultural trade and boost Nigeria’s export earnings.
The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, signed the agreement in Abuja alongside the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS), Dr Vincent Isegbe.
Yu said the protocol provides an institutional framework for implementing China’s zero-tariff policy for 53 African countries with which it has diplomatic relations.
“The signing marks an important institutional arrangement for implementing China’s zero-tariff policy for the 53 African countries with which China has diplomatic relations,” Yu said.
He said the agreement would establish clear inspection and quarantine procedures for Nigerian wild aquatic products entering the Chinese market.
According to him, the arrangement would help expand Nigeria’s agricultural exports, support the development of the fisheries sector and increase the country’s foreign exchange earnings.
The ambassador added that the protocol would further strengthen economic and trade relations between China and Nigeria.
“The Protocol will also inject fresh impetus into the deepening of China-Nigeria economic and trade cooperation, bringing greater opportunities and tangible benefits to our two peoples,” he said.
