Algeria have stunned hosts Morocco 3-2 on penalties after a dramatic encounter that ended in a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

Morocco took the lead in the first half and went into the break in control of proceedings, with the hosts looking set to secure a place in the next round.

Algeria, however, returned from the interval with renewed intensity and eventually found the equaliser after sustaining pressure on the Moroccan defence for more than 10 minutes.

The game remained finely balanced as both sides battled for a winner, with Morocco handed a golden opportunity to reclaim the lead in the 90th minute after being awarded a penalty.

The hosts, however, failed to convert from the spot, allowing Algeria to survive the late scare and force the contest into a penalty shootout.
