ASUU begins indefinite strike at Plateau State University

Lecturers at Plateau State University, Bokkos, have begun an indefinite strike over what they described as the university management’s failure to address their demands.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Plateau State University chapter (ASUU-PLASU), announced the strike on Wednesday after its Congress meeting.
The action followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university management on August 11.
In a statement signed by the union’s chairperson, Vincent D. Choji, and secretary, Lomka Kopdiya, ASUU said none of its six major demands had been satisfactorily resolved.
Among the demands is the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme and the full implementation of the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU, including the payment of outstanding arrears from January 1, 2026.
The lecturers also demanded safe and secure accommodation for staff, the construction of trenches around the university’s perimeter fence and an end to what they called intimidation of union leaders.
Another major demand is the payment of 22 months’ arrears of the 25/35 per cent wage award.
The union said, “Congress is convinced that the substance of our demands on all six items has not been satisfactorily addressed.”
ASUU-PLASU said its decision to embark on the strike was taken after receiving approval from the union’s National Executive Council.
It directed all members to immediately suspend academic activities until further notice.
