Van Bommel Agrees Deal To Become Belgium Head Coach

Mark van Bommel has reached an agreement to become the new head coach of Belgium, with the former Netherlands international set to sign a contract that will run until June 2028.

The 48-year-old will succeed Rudi Garcia, who is expected to leave the role following Belgium’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Although the contracts have not yet been formally signed, all parties have agreed to the terms of the appointment. An official confirmation is expected once the remaining paperwork has been completed.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano on X on Wednesday, the transfer journalist confirmed the development, stating: “Mark van Bommel as new Belgium head coach, here we go!

“Deal in place until June 2028 for van Bommel, ready to replace Rudi Garcia.”

Van Bommel will be taking charge of a national team for the first time in his coaching career, having previously established himself at club level.

The former Netherlands skipper has managed PSV Eindhoven, VfL Wolfsburg and Royal Antwerp, where he enjoyed his greatest success by leading the Belgian side to a historic league and Belgian Cup double in the 2022–23 campaign.

Belgium will be counting on the 48-year-old to spearhead the next phase of the national team’s rebuild as the Red Devils turn their attention to qualifying for UEFA Euro 2028.

The Red Devils bowed out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the quarter-final stage after a spirited run that ended with defeat to eventual champions Spain.

Van Bommel’s arrival signals the start of a new era for Belgium as the federation seeks to move beyond its celebrated golden generation and assemble another squad capable of challenging for major international honours.
