U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that a teenage lifeguard who helped rescue a 10-year-old boy from powerful waves at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz, California, will receive what he described as the “highest civilian honor.”
“We’re going to bring this heroic young man, and his family, into the White House with, perhaps, the boy he saved, to give him a High Civilian Honor,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“Very brave, he deserves it!” he added.
The unnamed 16-year-old lifeguard teamed up with another lifeguard to rescue the child after the boy lost his balance and was swept away by the current. The dramatic rescue unfolded in full view of beachgoers, many of whom watched from the shore as the pair worked together to save the child.
“Just a couple seconds difference, and I think this would have ended a lot different,” bystander Scott Vander Dussen told Nexstar’s KRON.

The rescue came as massive waves recently hit the eastern Pacific Ocean following tropical cyclones.
Footage of the rescue quickly went viral online, drawing praise from Trump’s son, Eric Trump, who had earlier called for the teenager to be recognised.
“Give this 16-year-old lifeguard the highest civilian honor. This is truly the best of America! Well done,” Eric wrote in a post on X.
