President Bola Tinubu has taken a swipe at the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, accusing him of leaving behind unpaid pension liabilities from the privatisation of government-owned enterprises.
Speaking during a meeting with North-East stakeholders who visited to thank him for re-nominating Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate, Tinubu said Nigerians were only asking for stability and improved social welfare.
“Nigerians are not asking for too much. Simple stability and social welfare, and among the visitors today are some pensioners. I hope you’re receiving your pension,” the President said.
In an apparent reference to Atiku, Tinubu added: “If I can go political, somebody among my prospective opponents privatized government investment in public entities but forgot to pay the pension. I’m clearing the pensioners now, clearing the mess they created.”
Atiku Abubakar served as head of the National Council on Privatisation during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Tinubu did not mention him by name in his remarks.
