A young lady said to be the daughter of Dennis Edward Aboagye, popularly known as Miracles Aboagye, has allegedlybeen pepper-sprayed during a protest at the forecourt of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) headquarters in Accra on Monday, July 13.
The protest was organised by supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), demanding the immediate release of Aboagye, who serves as the party’s Director of Communications and spokesperson for former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Video circulating from the protest shows a visibly distressed woman being interviewed by journalists at the scene.
Miracles Aboagye, the former Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCCoD), was arrested on Saturday, July 11, at Kotoka International Airport by EOCO officers assisted by Ghana Immigration Service personnel.
EOCO has confirmed the arrest is connected to investigations into the suspected misappropriation, misapplication, diversion and theft of approximately GH¢55 million in public funds at IMCCoD between August 2022 and February 2025.
NPP officials, including General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong and National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye, have alleged that Miracle Aboagye was arrested without prior notice, denied access to his lawyers, and held without formal charges, calling the arrest politically motivated.
EOCO has denied any political motive, stating investigations are being conducted professionally and within the law, and has said Miracle Aboagye will be granted bail in accordance with Ghana’s Constitution.
The identity of the woman allegedly pepper-sprayed and the specific circumstances of the incident have not been independently verified, and neither EOCO nor the Ghana Police Service has issued a statement addressing the claim.
