Police Hunt Killers Of Catholic Priest In Kogi

Police in Kogi State have launched a manhunt for the killers of Catholic priest Rev. Fr. Samuel Opeyemi Oyetoro, whose body was found with severe machete wounds along Church Road in Ajaokuta, as the state government ordered a comprehensive investigation into the killing.

Police spokesperson ASP Saliu Afusat said officers responded to a distress call on July 29 and discovered the priest’s lifeless body. He was confirmed dead at ASCL Hospital before being taken to the mortuary for an autopsy.

The victim was later identified as Rev. Fr. Samuel Opeyemi of St. Paul Parish, Ayetoro Gbede, in Ijumu Local Government Area, who was serving on relief duty at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Ajaokuta.

“The investigation has commenced, and upon completion of preliminary inquiries, the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet investigation and prosecution of those responsible,” Afusat said.

The Kogi State Government condemned the killing, describing it as “a heinous and unacceptable act.”

In a statement issued by Commissioner for Information and Communications Kingsley Fanwo, Governor Usman Ododo directed security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation, identify those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice.

“We condemn this senseless murder in the strongest terms and assure the Catholic Church, the family of the deceased and the people of Kogi State that no effort will be spared in bringing the perpetrators to justice,” the statement said.

The government extended its condolences to the Catholic Church, the Diocese, the family of the late priest and the Christian community, urging residents to remain calm, cooperate with investigators by providing credible information and refrain from spreading unverified reports that could hinder the investigation.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property through sustained collaboration with security agencies across the state.
