PDP Stakeholders Back Turaki Leadership, To Appeal Court Judgment

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says its Board of Trustees, state chairmen and governorship candidates have unanimously reaffirmed their support for the party’s Interim National Working Committee led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), following last week’s Federal High Court judgment in Abuja.

In a statement on Thursday, the party said the court, presided over by Justice Salim Olasupo Salim, dismissed a suit seeking recognition of the Turaki-led interim leadership, which was constituted by the National Executive Committee.

The decision follows the Supreme Court’s judgment which according to the party created what it described as a leadership vacuum.

Following the ruling, the PDP convened a special stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja attended by members of the Board of Trustees, state chairmen, ex-officio members and governorship candidates.

The meeting was chaired by Turaki.

The stakeholders resolved to challenge the Federal High Court judgment at the Court of Appeal, with the Board of Trustees, through its Secretary, Dr Muazu Babangida Aliyu, pledging to pursue the case through all available legal channels.

The Forum of State Chairmen, represented by its Chairman, Dr Tony Aziegbemi, expressed confidence in the Turaki-led leadership, while the party’s governorship candidates also reaffirmed their commitment to what they described as the PDP’s constitutional processes and legitimate leadership structure.

The meeting further directed all state chairmen and governorship candidates to begin grassroots mobilisation and citizen engagement activities across their respective states.

The party maintained that it remained committed to democratic values and its role as a credible opposition, insisting that a strong multi-party democracy is essential to preventing authoritarianism in Nigeria.
