NYCN Imo Announces By-Election to Fill Vacant Executive Offices

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Imo State Chapter, has announced plans to conduct a by-election to fill vacant executive offices within the state chapter following the approval of the Expanded State Executive Council.

The decision was reached during the Council’s meeting held on July 4, 2026, at the Imo Youth Centre, Concorde Avenue, New Owerri, according to a statement signed by the State Chairman, Comrade Humphrey Ikechukwu Osuji.

The Council explained that the planned by-election became necessary after several executive positions became vacant due to the death of some office holders and the prolonged absence of others from official duties, contrary to the provisions of the NYCN Constitution.

The statement recalled that on November 30, 2023, the Imo State High Court, presided over by Justice K. A. Lewanya, delivered a consent judgment affirming the emergence of Comrade Osuji and other executive members as the duly recognised leadership of the NYCN in the state.

According to the Council, a Disciplinary Committee was constituted in August 2025, under the chairmanship of the late Comrade Micheal Uzoma, to investigate the affected offices and recommend appropriate actions in line with the Council’s constitution.

The committee subsequently recommended that the affected offices be declared vacant and that a by-election be conducted to fill the positions. These recommendations were adopted by the Management Committee in January 2026.

However, the electoral process was suspended following the deaths of Pope Chijioke Ekwiegh and the committee chairman, the late Comrade Micheal Uzoma, the statement added.

Following renewed deliberations, the Expanded State Executive Council has now approved the immediate conduct of the by-election.

The election is scheduled to hold on Saturday, July 25, 2026, by 10:00 a.m. at the Imo Youth Centre, Owerri.

The Council called on eligible stakeholders and members to participate peacefully and responsibly in the exercise, reaffirming its commitment to promoting transparent, credible and constitutional leadership within the organisation.

It also expressed appreciation to the Imo State Government, the Ministry of Youth Development and Talent Hunt, security agencies and other stakeholders for their continued support towards youth development and democratic governance in the state.
