Nigeria’s Ruth Nyong Wins Silver In Women’s 48kg Weightlifting At Commonwealth Games

Team Nigeria’s impressive medal haul at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games received another boost on Monday as Ruth Asuquo Nyong clinched the silver medal in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event, continuing the country’s strong run of podium finishes in Scotland.

Competing at the SEC Armadillo, Nyong delivered a composed and determined performance, lifting a combined total of 168kg to earn Team Nigeria its seventh medal of the Games.

The Nigerian weightlifter opened her campaign with a best lift of 75kg in the snatch, finishing third after the first phase behind India’s Mirabai Chanu Saikhom, who recorded 85kg, and Malaysia’s Irene Jane Henry, who managed 77kg.

With the medals still up for grabs, Nyong produced an outstanding effort in the clean and jerk, successfully lifting 93kg to finish with a total of 168kg. The lift proved enough to edge Malaysia’s Henry, who finished with 167kg to claim bronze.

India’s Mirabai Chanu Saikhom dominated the event with a combined lift of 190kg, successfully defending her Commonwealth title while setting a new Games record.

Nyong’s silver further strengthened Team Nigeria’s impressive showing at the Games, following the country’s dominant performances in para powerlifting, where Nigerian athletes secured multiple gold and silver medals.

Her podium finish also comes as Nigeria’s athletics contingent prepares to begin competition, with several medal hopefuls expected to take to the track and field in the coming days.

With momentum continuing to build, Team Nigeria remains on course to challenge the National Sports Commission’s medal target as its athletes continue to impress across different events.

Nyong’s achievement was widely celebrated within the Nigerian camp, with teammates and officials hailing another podium finish that further improved the country’s position on the medals table.
