The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic relations with the Republic of Serbia as both countries seek to expand cooperation in trade, investment and infrastructure development.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, gave the assurance while receiving Serbia’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Jugoslav Vukadinović, on a courtesy visit in Abuja.

Akume described the relationship between Nigeria and Serbia as one founded on mutual respect, shared interests and decades of diplomatic cooperation, pledging the government’s continued support for deeper bilateral engagement.

The Serbian envoy described the relationship as historic, noting that Serbia, as the successor state of the former Yugoslavia, has maintained cordial ties with Nigeria since the country’s independence in 1960.

He recalled that the former Yugoslavia was among Nigeria’s earliest international partners and that both countries shared strong links through the Non-Aligned Movement.

Vukadinović said Serbia regards Nigeria as its foremost partner in Africa and expressed readiness to facilitate the return of Serbian companies to Nigeria to pursue new investment opportunities.

He highlighted the role of Serbian firms in delivering major infrastructure projects in Nigeria, including the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex, the National Assembly Complex in Abuja, the Kano State Ministerial Complex, hospitals, electrification projects, irrigation systems and dams.

The ambassador also said Serbia was willing to serve as a gateway for Nigerian businesses seeking access to markets in Southeastern Europe, expressing confidence that stronger economic cooperation would benefit both countries.
