The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has concluded a study tour for officials of the Zanzibar Utilities Regulatory Authority (ZURA), aimed at deepening regulatory cooperation and enhancing knowledge exchange in electricity sector regulation.

In a statement issued on the Ministry X handle on Tuesday evening, the tour, which ended on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, offered the ZURA delegation an opportunity to gain firsthand experience of Nigeria’s evolving electricity market, regulatory framework, and institutional structures.

Speaking at the close of the programme, NERC Vice Chairman, Yusuf Ali, highlighted the importance of sustained collaboration between both agencies and reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to continuous knowledge sharing through an established partnership framework.

As part of the visit, NERC facilitated engagements with key stakeholders in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), including a courtesy call on the Minister of Power, Mr. Joseph Tegbe.

The delegation also visited the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), and the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), where they held technical sessions with sector experts and officials.

Discussions during the study tour focused on Nigeria’s electricity market structure and regulatory framework, the growth of the renewable energy subsector, and the enforcement of the national grid code.

The ZURA team was also taken to the grid-connected rooftop solar mini-grid at Wuse Market in Abuja, to observe its operations, with a view to exploring the adoption of a similar model in Zanzibar.

According to the NERC, the exchange programme underscores its commitment to building institutional capacity and promoting regional cooperation among electricity regulators across Africa.

The commission noted that strengthening partnerships and sharing best practices remain critical to improving electricity access, enhancing regulatory efficiency, and supporting sustainable energy development across the continent.
