NELFUND Success Making Critics Uncomfortable, Says NANS President

The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Akinteye Babatunde, has said the growing success and acceptance of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) scheme are making some critics uncomfortable.

Babatunde stated this while reacting to a viral social media post alleging that beneficiaries of the student loan scheme would have almost their entire salaries deducted as loan repayments.

Responding to the post by an X user, @Admiral_Cyborg, who shared what appeared to be a bank transaction alert showing a salary credit of ₦115,628.52 followed by a ₦110,628.52 deduction labelled “NELFUND LOAN REPAYMENT,” the NANS president described the claim as misleading and an attempt to spread misinformation about the scheme.

He urged Nigerians, especially students, to understand the provisions of the NELFUND Act and the repayment structure before drawing conclusions about the initiative.

Babatunde said, “This is Mischievous, this is high level of ignorance and misinformation, you need to equip urself with the NELFUND LOAN act and read about the repayment plans and get knowledge.”

He added, “I think the SUCCESS NELFUND is attaining lately is making many of you uncomfortable.”

The NANS president advised students not to be discouraged by what he described as false narratives about the scheme, encouraging those unable to afford their tuition fees to take advantage of the programme.

“Dear Students, don’t be discourage with lies like this. If you can’t afford to pay your fee to go to school urself or your parent can’t afford it, get NELFUND,” he said.

Babatunde further described the initiative as a scheme created to support students in accessing education.

“It’s a scheme, made for you all,” he added.
