Meta, the parent company of Facebook, reported profits below Wall Street expectations after heavy spending on artificial intelligence, alongside significant legal and severance charges, weighed on its bottom line.
The technology giant said rising investments in AI infrastructure and talent, coupled with one-off legal and employee severance costs, reduced its quarterly earnings despite continued growth in its core business.
“The cost of staying in the race to deploy artificial intelligence, along with hefty legal and severance charges, hurt the company’s bottom line,” Meta said.
The results highlight the growing financial burden facing major technology firms as they compete to develop advanced AI capabilities, requiring billions of dollars in investment in data centres, chips and research.
Despite the weaker-than-expected profit, Meta said it remains committed to expanding its AI capabilities, describing artificial intelligence as a key driver of its long-term growth strategy.
