Lone PDP Lawmaker In Jigawa Assembly Joins APC

The ruling All Progressives Congress has strengthened its grip on Jigawa State politics as the last opposition member of the State House of Assembly defects from the Peoples Democratic Party, leaving the 30-member Assembly entirely under APC control.

Muhammad Kabir, who represents Birnin Kudu Constituency and is widely regarded as a close political ally of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, formally joined the APC at the Government House in Dutse alongside hundreds of supporters.

His defection marks a major political shift in the state, making the Jigawa State House of Assembly a fully APC legislature.

The move comes after another former PDP lawmaker, Yahaya Zakari, also crossed over to the ruling party.

Speaking after his defection, Kabir said his decision was driven by what he described as Governor Umar Namadi’s leadership, development programmes and legislative cooperation over the past three years.

He said after consulting his family, political associates and supporters, he decided to join the APC to contribute to the state’s development.

Governor Umar Namadi welcomed the lawmaker and assured him of equal treatment within the party.

The governor said the APC remains committed to fairness, inclusiveness and working with everyone willing to support the development of Jigawa State, regardless of political background.

The latest defection further strengthens the APC’s political dominance in Jigawa ahead of future political activities, while attention now shifts to how the absence of opposition voices in the State Assembly could shape legislative debates and democratic engagement.
