Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has signed a series of Executive Orders aimed at overhauling the state’s education sector, while launching the distribution of the national curriculum to public schools.
The reforms, unveiled during a meeting with education stakeholders at the Government House in Gusau on Tuesday, establish an integrated governance framework covering education financing, school protection, quality assurance, health, security and school classification.

According to a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the measures also address school governance, feeding programmes, student welfare, transportation safety, safe schools implementation, regulation of graduation ceremonies, unified examinations, school health services, merit-based leadership appointments, inclusive education and the promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and digital learning.
Governor Lawal described education as the most effective tool for reducing poverty, promoting peace, strengthening security and driving economic growth.
“These Executive Orders are not isolated directives. Together, they constitute a comprehensive governance framework designed to strengthen school administration, improve accountability, protect public educational assets, enhance financing, promote safety, raise educational standards, improve learning outcomes, and prepare our children for the demands of the twenty-first century,” he said.
The governor noted that previous education reforms had focused largely on infrastructure, stressing that quality education also requires strong governance, accountability and effective learning systems.
Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abdulmalik Abubakar Gajam, said the success of the reforms would depend on collaboration among government, teachers, parents, communities, traditional institutions, development partners and the private sector.
He expressed confidence that the reforms would lead to safer schools, improved governance, healthier learners, better teaching standards and stronger public confidence in Zamfara’s education system.
