Kwankwaso Confirms Peter Obi Signed One-Term Presidency Agreement for 2027

Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has confirmed that the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, signed a formal agreement committing to serve only one four-year term if elected president in the 2027 general election.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Tuesday, Kwankwaso said the agreement was not based on verbal assurances alone but was documented in writing to demonstrate the commitment of both leaders.

According to him, separate agreements were signed—one on behalf of the NDC and another between himself and Obi—to reinforce the arrangement.

“We are all gentlemen. Even though we have accepted to put it even on paper. We have done one for the party, and we have done another one between the two of us,” Kwankwaso said.

The revelation comes amid growing speculation about a one-term presidency deal between Obi and Kwankwaso as part of a broader opposition strategy to strengthen their chances of defeating President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential election.

Kwankwaso also praised the commitment of their supporters, describing them as politically conscious citizens determined not only to cast their votes but also to safeguard the electoral process.

When asked whether he would contest the presidency in 2031, Kwankwaso declined to make a firm declaration, saying the coalition’s immediate focus is securing victory in the 2027 election.

He explained that the opposition alliance has short-, medium-, and long-term plans aimed at reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape.

“We are praying that all of us should see 2027 and, of course, 2031. We will look at the circumstances and see what can be done,” he said.

The reported one-term agreement has become a major topic in political discussions ahead of the 2027 elections. Supporters argue it could strengthen opposition unity and promote political balance, while critics continue to question its practicality, legal implications, and potential impact on Nigeria’s political future.
