Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has declared that his administration is ready to establish a State Police structure, saying it would strengthen internal security and improve the protection of lives and property across the state.
According to a report by The Guardian, Yusuf made the declaration on Wednesday while inaugurating the Inter-Agencies Task Force on Drug Abuse and Trafficking at the Ante Chamber of the Government House in Kano.
The governor said the proposed State Police, recently passed by the National Assembly, would complement existing security arrangements at the sub-national level and boost efforts to tackle insecurity.
Yusuf dismissed concerns that the new policing system could create rivalry with the Nigeria Police Force, insisting that both institutions would work together towards the shared goal of protecting lives and property, maintaining law and order, and fostering peaceful coexistence.
He added that the State Police and the Nigeria Police Force should be regarded as partners that would strengthen intelligence gathering, improve rapid response to security threats, and enhance public confidence in law enforcement.
The Governor stated that Kano State possesses the institutional capacity, human resources, and political will required to successfully establish and sustain a State Police system once the necessary constitutional and legal frameworks are in place.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting every legitimate initiative aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture and creating a safer environment where citizens can pursue their economic, educational, and social activities without fear.
Governor Yusuf noted that the inauguration of the Inter-Agencies Task Force on Drug Abuse and Trafficking demonstrates his administration’s resolve to tackle the growing menace of drug abuse and illicit trafficking through enhanced collaboration among security agencies, law enforcement institutions, and other critical stakeholders.
He charged members of the Task Force to discharge their responsibilities with professionalism, dedication, and integrity, stressing that the fight against drug abuse and trafficking requires sustained commitment, effective inter-agency cooperation, and the active support of all stakeholders.
Chairman of the taskforce Barr. Muhuyi Magaji Rimin-Gado assured the Governor the readiness to serve with dedication and loyalty without fair and favor.
