The Jigawa State Government is taking another step to strengthen its economy with the launch of a digital tax platform aimed at improving revenue collection from the informal sector, ending leakages and making tax payments more transparent.
The new platform, introduced by the Jigawa Internal Revenue Service (JIRS), replaces manual revenue collection with a digital system that allows real-time monitoring and direct payment into government accounts.
Executive Chairman of JIRS, Nasir Sabo, says the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to modernise tax administration and improve accountability.
He explains that the programme also trains revenue collectors on the Tax Reform Act 2025 and strengthens the collection framework for livestock, grain and haulage businesses.
The impact of earlier digital reforms is already visible.
Jigawa’s Internally Generated Revenue rose from ₦27.5 billion in 2023 to ₦62.6 billion in 2024, reflecting growing confidence in the state’s technology-driven approach.
Technology partner, etranzact International, says the platform will use mobile wallets, Point-of-Sale terminals and other digital tools to simplify tax payments for traders, market leaders and revenue collectors across the state. The company is targeting at least ₦500 million in monthly revenue from the informal sector while ensuring every transaction is transparent and traceable.
Representing Governor Umar Namadi at the inauguration, Coordinator of the Jigawa Enlightenment and Engagement Tax Team, Muhammad Mukufi, says paying taxes is a shared responsibility that enables government to provide better roads, healthcare, schools, markets and security for citizens.
Chairman of Kiyawa Local Government, Abdulhamid Ibrahim, calls for stronger efforts to block revenue leakages and broaden local revenue sources beyond market collections.
For many traders at the event, the new application is easy to understand and simple to use, raising hopes that digital technology will make tax payment faster, fairer and more convenient.
With the new digital platform, Jigawa is betting on technology to improve tax compliance, increase internally generated revenue and provide more resources for public services that directly benefit residents.
