IGP Disu Reaffirms Commitment to Police Reform, State Policing

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to police reform, state policing and stronger inter-agency collaboration in tackling emerging internal security challenges.

In a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, on Wednesday, Disu stated this when he received the Commandant, management, directing staff, participants and support staff of the National Defence College (NDC) on a courtesy visit to the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

The visit focused on police reform, state policing, command and coordination protocols, as well as emerging internal security concerns.

The NDC delegation was led by its Commandant, Rear Admiral A. Ahmed, and included the Deputy Commandant/Director of Studies, Major General K. E. Chigbu; College Secretary, Air Vice Marshal E. Owai; Provost, CSRS, Prof. A. O. Ahmad, and other senior officers and faculty members.

Also on the delegation were police participants at the College, including CP S. A. Afunluhi, DCP S. Yahaya, DCP O. O. Yusuf and DCP I. B. Usang.

Speaking during the visit, Rear Admiral Ahmed said the paper presented by the participants was the product of rigorous research conducted entirely by police officers at the College.

He said, “The paper presented by the participants was the product of rigorous research undertaken entirely by Police officers at the College.”

According to him, faculty members only provided academic guidance and methodological direction, while the participants applied their professional knowledge, critical thinking and experience to develop practical and implementable strategic options.

He added that the findings and recommendations would contribute to the national conversation on police reform and strengthen the capacity of the Nigeria Police Force to address contemporary and emerging internal security challenges towards 2035.

Responding, Disu described the study as “timely and highly relevant to Nigeria’s evolving security landscape,” while commending the officers for its depth, scholarly quality and practical value.

The IGP noted that the research would provide “a strong foundation for shaping the framework for state policing,” particularly through its sound methodology, comprehensive analysis of public concerns and practical recommendations informed by comparative experiences from countries operating state police systems.

Disu reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthening institutional collaboration with the National Defence College and other strategic partners in furtherance of effective policing, internal security and national development.
