House of Reps Erupts in Chaos Over Move to Summon President Tinubu
The House of Representatives descended into chaos on Wednesday after lawmakers clashed over a motion to summon President Bola Tinubu to address delays in implementing the 2025 budget.
The disagreement began when Benedict Etanabene, representing Okpe/Sapele/Uvwie federal constituency in Delta State, raised a point of privilege during plenary to highlight a June 29 circular from the Accountant-General of the Federation, Shamseldeen Ogunjimi.
The circular directed all federal ministries, departments, and agencies to halt payments for constituency and zonal intervention projects until the Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs formally vets them.
Etanabene argued that the directive would further stall the Appropriation Act’s execution and called for Tinubu to appear before the House to explain the delays.
Abia State lawmaker Mascot Ikwechegh backed the concerns, questioning the slow pace of budget implementation and its effect on government operations.
The motion immediately split the chamber, with opposing lawmakers repeatedly shouting “sit down” at colleagues speaking in its favour. The resulting shouting match stalled proceedings for roughly 30 minutes.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas eventually threw out the motion, ruling that the prayers presented on the floor did not match the original document submitted by its sponsors and therefore breached procedure.
