Popular Nigerian content creator and relationship commentator, Emmanuel Obruste, popularly known as GehGeh, has defended himself against criticism sparked by viral videos showing him at a traditional wedding ceremony, insisting he never advised Nigerians against getting married.

The social media personality came under fire after sharing clips from the ceremony on his X account, where he appeared alongside a woman dressed in matching burgundy traditional attire. An invitation card seen in one of the videos identified the couple as Mary and Prosper, with the event scheduled for July 25, 2026 prompting speculation that GehGeh had secretly tied the knot.

Despite captioning one of the videos, “So I no fit represent my brother wey dey abroad?”, many social media users remained unconvinced, accusing him of contradicting the relationship advice that has made him one of Nigeria’s most controversial online commentators.

The backlash intensified as several internet personalities weighed in on the issue. Content creator Carter Efe claimed GehGeh’s relationship advice contributed to the collapse of his 12-year relationship, while others questioned the authenticity of his public image if the ceremony turned out to be his wedding.

Responding to the criticism, GehGeh insisted that many people had misrepresented his views, maintaining that he had never discouraged anyone from getting married.

“I never for once told y’all not to get married. Did I? If yes, show me a video of me telling you not to marry,” he wrote on X.

He also argued that many Nigerians fail to understand how social media works, suggesting that not everything shared online should be interpreted literally.

“Nigerians really don’t understand how social media works. If you know how to use it properly, you will never lack,” he added.

The renewed attention comes days after GehGeh revealed during an interview that he has four baby mothers and is expecting children with two other women, a disclosure that also generated widespread reactions online.

Although the true nature of the traditional ceremony remains unclear, the viral videos have continued to fuel debate over whether GehGeh’s personal life aligns with the relationship opinions that built his online following.

Meanwhile, one of his relatives in a video revealed that they were not invited to the ceremony.

She said, “He didn’t invite anybody in the family to
his wedding or did you see me wearing aso ebi? Our mother gave birth to 8 children, did you see any of us there? Now I know that to be a member of your own family, you need to have money. We were not invited because we don’t have money.”
