FG Targets Seven Million Electricity Meters Through New Initiative

The Federal Government says it is stepping up efforts to eliminate Nigeria’s electricity metering gap through the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI) and a $500 million World Bank-backed Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP).
Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Ayodeji Ariyo Gbeleyi, said the combined programmes are expected to deliver about seven million electricity meters nationwide, exceeding the country’s estimated metering deficit of 5.6 million.

According to Gbeleyi, the World Bank intervention includes $250 million dedicated to the procurement and deployment of electricity meters as part of the broader $500 million DISREP designed to strengthen the country’s electricity distribution sector.
He said the programme targets the installation of 3.22 million meters, adding that contracts have already been awarded for 1.4 million units.
Of these, about 1.1 million meters have arrived in Nigeria, while more than 700,000 have been installed across the country.
Gbeleyi noted that the installations are being carried out by trained young Nigerians, creating jobs while improving electricity service delivery.
He added that the Presidential Metering Initiative will complement the World Bank-supported programme, with the combined rollout expected to not only bridge the existing metering gap but also provide meters for new customers joining the national grid in the coming years.
