The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, says the agency is well-equipped to tackle emerging financial crimes despite increasingly sophisticated tactics employed by fraudsters.
Olukoyede, represented by the Head of the Economic Governance Section of the EFCC’s Kaduna Zonal Directorate, Sadiq Abubakar, stated this at the inaugural Town Hall meeting of the EFCC’s Zero Tolerance Club at Ahmadu Bello University, Kongo Campus, Zaria.
Delivering a keynote address titled “Following the Money: Legal Loopholes and the Fight Against Corruption in Nigeria,” he described corruption as one of the biggest obstacles to Nigeria’s development, saying it weakens institutions, discourages investment and diverts resources meant for public welfare.
He said while advances in technology have enabled criminals to develop new methods of financial fraud, the EFCC has also adopted modern investigative tools and innovative enforcement strategies to combat evolving threats.
Olukoyede reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to anti-corruption advocacy and stressed the need for greater transparency, accountability and stronger enforcement to curb economic and financial crimes.
He also identified delays in the criminal justice system as a major impediment to the fight against corruption, noting that prolonged investigations and court proceedings weaken prosecutions and erode public confidence in the justice system.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor Salim Bashir Magashi, praised the initiative, saying it would encourage students to embrace integrity and shun fraudulent practices.
The event featured a debate by members of the Zero Tolerance Club on the need for a specialised anti-corruption court to handle EFCC cases, while the club’s staff adviser, Bukar Suleiman, urged students to avoid corruption, warning that it could destroy their future prospects.
