Deschamps Urges France To Stay Alert Against Paraguay In World Cup Last 16
France manager Didier Deschamps has cautioned his players against underestimating Paraguay ahead of today’s FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash in Philadelphia, insisting the South Americans have earned their place among the tournament’s final 16.
NEWSNGR reports that the Les Bleus head into the knockout tie in confident mood after an impressive run of goals, but Deschamps believes Paraguay have already shown they are capable of causing major problems, particularly after their shock win over Germany.
The France coach said Paraguay’s progress has been built on discipline, resilience and quality rather than luck.
“Paraguay didn’t just come out of nowhere. Like all South American teams, they have a big heart. It’s not aggressiveness that wins a match,” Deschamps said.
“It’s a team that knows its football well. They have good players: Enciso, Almiron… They know each other, they do things well. But that’s not all.”
Deschamps also highlighted the importance of France’s midfield, arguing that his side’s recent attacking displays have been made possible by the work done behind the forwards.
He said, “We talk about the attack because we’re scoring goals. But between the defensive line and the attack, there’s the midfield. Whether it’s Aurélien (Tchouameni), Adrien (Rabiot), or Manu (Kone), they provide balance and pressing. You can’t separate the lines. It’s a puzzle, you need to have connections.”
He added that France must also cope with the challenging weather conditions expected in Philadelphia, stressing that intensity alone will not be enough to secure victory.
Deschamps also reflected on a memorable World Cup meeting between the two nations, saying Paraguay have long possessed the qualities that make them difficult opponents.
“My players weren’t born at that time, but I remember it. It was an important moment for me, for France. It was a tough match; it’s part of football history, of World Cup history. Today, it’s a different match, but Paraguay’s qualities are the same,” the French coach said.
