Former Miss Universe Nigeria and Miss Universe Africa & Oceania, Chidimma Adetshina, has returned to court in South Africa as legal proceedings over her immigration status and possible deportation continue.
The case, which has drawn widespread attention across Africa, came up before the Cape Town Regional Court, where South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs is seeking legal backing to proceed with her deportation.
At the latest hearing, the court considered legal arguments surrounding Adetshina’s immigration status and is expected to review affidavits and other evidence submitted by both parties before delivering a decision.
According to South African publication IOL, Adetshina is contesting the government’s move to deport her, maintaining that she has taken steps to regularise her immigration status.

The Department of Home Affairs, however, argues that the beauty queen is residing in South Africa unlawfully and should be removed from the country in line with the provisions of the Immigration Act.
IOL also reported that the department is seeking a court order confirming Adetshina’s detention pending deportation, insisting that she is not legally entitled to remain in the country.
Her legal team is opposing the application, arguing that detention is unnecessary and urging the court to consider alternatives while the immigration dispute is being resolved.
The proceedings have become one of South Africa’s most closely watched immigration cases, largely due to Adetshina’s international profile following her participation in the Miss Universe pageant.
The Department of Home Affairs launched an investigation into identity documents allegedly linked to Adetshina and her mother, amid growing anti-immigration sentiment in South Africa.
The publication further reported that the department claims to have uncovered prima facie indications of fraud and identity theft involving documentation associated with Adetshina’s mother.
The court is expected to hear additional submissions before determining whether the Department of Home Affairs can proceed with Adetshina’s deportation or whether her legal challenge against the process will succeed.
