The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that the 2027 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will feature 24 national teams, dismissing reports suggesting a possible change to the tournament format.
CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe made the clarification during a press conference on Wednesday, according to a statement shared on the football body’s official X handle, on Thursday.
CAF said media reports claiming otherwise were inaccurate, stressing that the 2027 continental championship would proceed with the existing 24-team format.

“At Wednesday’s press conference, CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe confirmed that the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations in 2027 will have 24 National Teams,” CAF stated.
The football governing body added that “media reports suggesting otherwise is untrue.”
CAF also announced that the tournament is scheduled to hold between June and July 2027, while qualification matches are expected to commence in September/October 2026.
“The AFCON 2027 will be played in June-July 2027 and the Qualifiers will start in September/October 2026,” the statement added.
The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, marking the first time the tournament will be staged in the East African region.
