As reconstruction of the failed expansion joint on the Kara Bridge (outbound Lagos) gets underway, motorists using the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway should prepare for temporary changes over the next two weeks.

Here are 10 things to expect:

1. Two Weeks of Repair Work
The reconstruction began on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, and is expected to last for two weeks.

2.  Lane Reduction
The existing four-lane carriageway will be reduced to two lanes over a 1.5-kilometre stretch to allow construction work to proceed safely.

3.  Heavy Traffic Congestion
Motorists should expect significant traffic build-up, particularly on the outbound Lagos-Ibadan corridor, especially during peak hours.

4. Longer Travel Times
Journeys through the Kara Bridge axis are likely to take longer than usual because of reduced road capacity.

5.Alternative Routes Recommended
Road users are encouraged to consider the Ikorodu-Sagamu Expressway and the Lekki-Epe Expressway where feasible.

6. Work-from-Home Appeal
The FRSC has urged organisations and businesses with flexible work arrangements to allow employees to work remotely to reduce traffic volume.

7. Increased Presence of Traffic Officials
FRSC personnel, traffic management agencies and other emergency responders will be deployed to manage traffic and ensure safety.

8. Strict Enforcement of Traffic Rules
Motorists caught driving against traffic (one-way) or violating traffic regulations will be arrested and sanctioned.

9. Improved Safety After Completion
The repairs are aimed at preventing crashes, preserving the bridge’s structural integrity and improving safety for all road users.

10. Need for Patience and Planning
Motorists are advised to plan trips ahead, travel outside peak periods where possible, obey traffic officials and exercise patience throughout the repair period.
