IGP appoints new police spokesman, replaces placid after brief tenure
Olatunji Disu, the Inspector-General of Police has approved the appointment of CSP Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu as the new force public relations officer of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), just three months after the appointment of DCP Anthony Okon Placid, his predecessor.
A statement issued on Friday by Placid, the outgoing Force PRO, confirmed the development, noting that Iniedu’s appointment takes immediate effect.
The police described the new spokesperson as a seasoned officer with wide experience in public communication, operational policing, intelligence management, and administrative duties.
Iniedu, an indigene of Etinan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Pure Chemistry from the University of Uyo. He has also undergone several professional trainings in investigative interviewing, crime scene management, human rights-based policing, strategic communication, and intelligence analysis.
Before his appointment, he served as Head of the Complaint Response Unit at Force Headquarters, Abuja, where he coordinated public complaints and promoted accountability and transparency within the force.
He had also previously served in several operational and administrative capacities, including Public Relations Officer at the Police College of Information Technology, Kobape, Ogun State; Operations Officer in Yobe State; Area Crime Officer in Abia State; and Officer-in-Charge of the Force Headquarters Situation Room.
According to the statement, Iniedu also held key roles within the Mobile Police Force and the IGP Secretariat, where he contributed to intelligence coordination and crime reporting systems nationwide.
The Inspector-General of Police expressed confidence in his ability to strengthen the Force’s communication strategy and improve public engagement in support of ongoing policing reforms.
Iniedu succeeds DCP Anthony Okon Placid, who assumed office on March 8, 2026, after replacing the former spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin.
