BREAKING: Osun Govt Alerts DSS, Police as LG Chairmen Move to Resume Duties
The Osun State Government has requested security agencies to remove former local government chairmen from council secretariats to allow newly elected officials to take office.
In a letter dated addressed to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 11 in Osogbo, the state’s legal representatives requested the immediate removal of the former officials and the provision of security for incoming council staff.
The development follows Monday’s, judgment by the Federal High Court in Osogbo, which dismissed a tenure elongation suit filed by the former local government chairmen.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the officials were originally elected during a controversial October 2022 election under the previous administration.
Following a violent takeover of the council secretariats by the sacked officials in February 2025, the recent High Court ruling declared their continued occupation unconstitutional.
The counsel to the state government, Musibau Adetunbi (SAN) & Co., noted that the court rejected all reliefs sought by the former All Progressives Congress chairmen. The law firm stated that Governor Ademola Adeleke gave an executive order directing the police to “remove the illegal APC chairmen and ensure the safety of all local government staff and smooth resumption of the elected council Chairmen elected on 22nd February, 2025.”
The legal team further explained that the former officials had specifically asked the court to allow them to continue in office and to void the 2025 local government election. However, the letter noted that “all the reliefs specifically sought by them were expressly refused by the court and their Originating Summons dismissed in its entirety.”
The firm stressed that “filing of an appeal or an application for stay is not itself an order of court to restrain implementation of the judgment,” and called on law enforcement to “act accordingly by removing the illegal occupiers and ensuring safe resumption of duties of the duly elected officials.”
