Police Detain ASP After Stray Bullet Kills Young Girl During Lagos Operation

The Lagos State Police Command has detained an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Omotayo Olajide, following a shooting incident that claimed the life of a young girl and left another injured in the Ajegunle area of Lagos State.
The incident occurred on Thursday, November 5, 2026, between 9:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. in the Nosamu area of Ajegunle.
According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed that Olajide and other officers were deployed to the area following a distress call over a violent clash between two rival groups identified as Nosamu Boys and Alayabiagba Boys.
The groups were reportedly engaged in a fight over toll collection and were allegedly armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons when the police team arrived at the scene.
During the operation, ASP Olajide reportedly discharged his firearm, and the bullet struck two young girls.
The victims were immediately rushed to Ajeromi General Hospital for medical attention. However, one of the girls was later transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, where she eventually died.
The second victim is currently receiving medical treatment and is said to be in stable condition.
Following the incident, the police confirmed that Olajide had been disarmed and taken into custody, while the matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough and impartial investigation.
The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and determine the appropriate legal and disciplinary measures against the officer.
The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Tijani Fatai, reportedly visited the bereaved family to sympathise with them over the tragic loss.
Fatai assured the family that justice would be served, stressing that no police officer found responsible for the incident would be protected from accountability.
In a statement released on Saturday, November 7, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, expressed the command’s sadness over the death of the young girl, describing it as the loss of an innocent life.
The police also assured members of the public that the investigation would be handled professionally and that updates would be provided as it progresses.
The Command further appealed to anyone with useful information that could assist investigators to report to the nearest police station or contact the Police Public Relations Department.
The incident has once again raised concerns about the use of firearms during police operations and the need to ensure that innocent residents are protected during security interventions.
