Obi Challenges Tinubu To Account For $100bn Loans, ₦15.8trn Fuel Subsidy Savings

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has challenged President Bola Tinubu to visit the remaining 33 states of the federation and explain how his administration has utilised over $100 billion in borrowed funds and the ₦15.8 trillion reportedly saved from the removal of fuel subsidy.
Obi said Nigerians deserved transparency and accountability regarding the resources available to the Federal Government since Tinubu assumed office in May 2023.
The former Anambra State governor made the demand in a statement issued on Saturday, November 7, 2026, titled ‘Good Day, Mr President: Nigerians Deserve Accountability’.
His comments followed Tinubu’s recent visit to Akwa Ibom State, where the president reportedly spent a night outside Lagos and Abuja.
While congratulating Tinubu on the visit, Obi expressed hope that it would encourage the president to travel to other states, interact with citizens and explain the achievements of his administration.
He said, “I congratulate you on spending a night in one of Nigeria’s states outside Lagos and Abuja. I hope you enjoyed the warmth, hospitality, and delicious cuisine of Akwa Ibom.”
However, Obi questioned the president’s frequent foreign trips, alleging that Tinubu had spent more than 260 days outside Nigeria since assuming office.
He challenged the president to visit the remaining 33 states and provide explanations on how the funds generated through borrowing, increased government revenue, taxation and fuel subsidy removal had been spent.
According to Obi, Nigerians deserve to know what has happened to the ₦15.8 trillion reportedly saved from fuel subsidy removal and the over $100 billion borrowed by the administration.
The NDC presidential candidate also demanded an account of additional government revenues, including the increased tax collections and other earnings that the Federal Government reportedly celebrated after exceeding its revenue target last year.
Obi maintained that the government should provide measurable evidence of improvements in the living conditions of Nigerians, particularly in poverty reduction, education, healthcare, electricity and national security.
He specifically asked the Tinubu administration to disclose the number of Nigerians lifted out of poverty since it assumed office and the number of out-of-school children who had been returned to classrooms.
He also demanded information on the number of functional primary healthcare centres constructed by the Federal Government.
On electricity, Obi questioned the extent to which power supply had improved across the country, recalling Tinubu’s earlier promise that Nigerians should not vote for him if he failed to address the nation’s electricity challenges.
He said citizens deserved to know the progress made in the power sector, given the importance of reliable electricity to economic growth and improved living standards.
Addressing the security situation, Obi called on the president to explain the administration’s efforts to protect lives and property, noting that Nigeria continued to face serious terrorism and insecurity challenges.
He insisted that the government must provide clear answers on how public resources had been utilised and the results achieved since Tinubu took office.
Obi further stressed that accountability, transparency and measurable improvements in citizens’ welfare must remain central to Nigeria’s development.
He said the country could only achieve meaningful progress when public resources translated into tangible benefits for ordinary Nigerians.
According to him, the New Nigeria he envisions must be built on accountability, transparency and the visible impact of government policies and spending on the lives of citizens.
