WAEC appoints Suleiman Kum as new Nigeria national office head

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Suleiman Kum as the new Head of its Nigeria National Office.
Kum, 56, assumed office on October 1, 2026, following the completion of the three-year tenure of Dr Amos Dangut, who has moved on to become the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of WAEC.
The appointment was announced by WAEC Head of Public Affairs in Nigeria, Moyosola Adesina, who described Kum as an experienced test developer, examination administrator and executive with extensive knowledge of the council’s operations.
Kum joined WAEC on July 17, 1998, as an Assistant Registrar II and has risen through several positions during his more than 28 years with the organisation.
Before his appointment as Head of the Nigeria National Office, he served as Senior Deputy Registrar in charge of Test Administration. He had also previously worked as Deputy Registrar in the Office of the Head of the National Office.
Over the years, Kum has held several key positions within WAEC, including Head of Examinations Security, Branch Controller in Gusau and Kano, and officer in charge of operations in Awka, Yola and Makurdi.
He also served as Head of the Security Printing Department, Zonal Coordinator in Port Harcourt and Ikeja, Director of Administration, and Senior Deputy Registrar for Test Administration.
WAEC said Kum contributed significantly to several technological and administrative reforms introduced by the council.
Among his contributions were the introduction of variable data printing and improved code-security measures in examination security printing. He also played a role in introducing facial-recognition biometric devices to replace the council’s previous attendance systems.
Kum was further involved in the implementation of Achievement Tests through computer-based examinations, as part of efforts to modernise WAEC’s assessment processes.
He also helped establish the WAEC office in Gusau as a Custodial Centre and has extensive experience in test development, examination security, test administration, as well as the management of branch and zonal offices.
Kum is from Plateau State. He holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and is currently pursuing a Master of Education degree in Educational Administration and Planning at the same institution.
His appointment places him at the helm of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office at a time when the examination body continues to expand the use of technology and strengthen security measures in the conduct and administration of examinations.
