Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare continued his push for a recall to the Super Eagles with his fifth goal of the season, but his effort was not enough to prevent Ajax from suffering a 3-1 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Eredivisie at the Johan Cruijff Arena on Saturday.

PSV took the lead inside four minutes when Ivan Perisic’s deep cross was headed across goal by Ruben van Bommel for Ricardo Pepi to score from close range, marking the third consecutive Eredivisie meeting in which PSV had found the net within the opening 10 minutes.

Arokodare, who is on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers and has made an impressive start to life at Ajax, restored parity in the 23rd minute with a low effort that bounced in off the far corner.

The goal extended his scoring run to four consecutive matches for the Dutch club and further underlined his strong start to the campaign.

PSV regained the lead with the final kick of the first half as Lutsharel Geertruida, making his debut for the visitors, volleyed home from a corner.

Esmir Bajraktarevic completed the scoring in the second minute of stoppage time with a low finish into the far corner to seal all three points for PSV.

Ajax goalkeeper Matej Kovar made five saves as the hosts finished with 19 attempts compared with PSV’s 13, but they were unable to find a way back into the contest.

The defeat leaves Ajax without a win in their last five Eredivisie home matches and six points behind PSV, although they have a game in hand.

Arokodare last represented Nigeria in November 2025 during the 2026 World Cup play-off against DR Congo and was subsequently omitted from the squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

His current form, however, is likely to strengthen his case for a return to Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles squad.
