Police Highlight INTERPOL Collaboration In Fight Against Transnational Crime

The Nigeria Police Force has joined law enforcement agencies worldwide to mark the United Nations International Day of Police Cooperation, highlighting the importance of cross-border collaboration in tackling transnational crime.

The Force said modern criminal networks increasingly operate across jurisdictions, with cyber fraudsters targeting victims in different countries and organised crime groups moving people, illicit goods and proceeds across borders.

It said sustained intelligence sharing and coordinated investigations with international partners had produced practical results in Nigeria, including the identification and recovery of stolen property, tracking of fugitives, disruption of organised crime networks and combating cyber-enabled crime.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, international cooperation contributed to the arrest and repatriation of Victor Benjamin Fejemirokum, a murder suspect wanted over the abduction and killing of an FRSC officer and her daughter in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The police said Fejemirokum’s movements were traced through a viral social media video, after which he was located and arrested in Ghana by the Ghana Police Service before being repatriated to Nigeria.

The collaboration also led to the arrest in Okota, Lagos, of Mark Sunny Okoh, a Brazilian national wanted in connection with cocaine trafficking.

Okoh, who allegedly fled Brazil after jumping bail, was arrested following international coordination, while extradition proceedings to Brazil have commenced.

The Force said the cases demonstrated how international police cooperation could prevent criminals from exploiting jurisdictional boundaries to evade justice.

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to deepening collaboration with INTERPOL and other international law enforcement agencies.

Disu stressed the importance of intelligence sharing, coordinated investigations, capacity building and cross-border operational support in confronting emerging security threats.

He said the police would continue to strengthen international partnerships to support intelligence-led policing, protect communities and improve the collective response to transnational crime.

The Force said it remained committed to working with domestic and international partners to protect lives and property, support victims and build safer communities.
