Police Deny Terrorist Attack At Asaba Airport

The Airport Police Command has dismissed reports of a terrorist attack or security breach at the Asaba International Airport in Delta State, describing the security operation witnessed at the facility as a simulation exercise.
The exercise, according to the command was conducted by the office of the national security adviser on Thursday, September 10, to test the preparedness and response capabilities of security and emergency-response agencies.
The clarification follows reports and videos circulating on social media and other platforms suggesting that the airport had come under a terrorist attack.
In a statement on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Airport Police Command, ASP Mohammed Adeola, said the exercise was part of efforts to strengthen security preparedness and inter-agency coordination at critical infrastructure.
He said the exercise involved the deployment of security personnel and other stakeholders to recreate a simulated security incident within the airport environment.

According to him, the exercise was designed to test existing response mechanisms, communication channels, command and control structures, as well as the ability of participating agencies to respond effectively to potential emergencies.
“The exercise was therefore a controlled and authorised activity and should not be misconstrued as an actual terrorist attack or invasion of the airport,” Adeola said.
The police spokesperson urged members of the public, particularly travellers and airport users, to disregard the reports and refrain from circulating unverified information capable of causing fear and panic.
He assured that the security situation at the airport remained under control, adding that security agencies were vigilant and committed to protecting passengers, airport personnel, facilities and other stakeholders.
The command also urged members of the public to rely on verified information from authorised government and security agencies.
It said the cooperation of the public remains important to ongoing efforts to strengthen national security preparedness and protect critical airport infrastructure.
