Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has attended the commissioning of the Makinde/Daura Presidential Campaign Headquarters of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Abuja, fuelling speculation of possible high-level talks between the opposition party and Obi’s political camp ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi’s presence at the event is being viewed as a potential signal of growing engagement among opposition forces seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next presidential election.
The APM described the commissioning as the beginning of its campaign to “reset Nigeria” and provide Nigerians with an alternative political direction.
Speaking at the event, APM National Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, said the party’s presidential ticket of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and his running mate, Lawal Daura, represented a credible alternative to what he described as Nigeria’s “perilous course”.
Dantalle said the turnout at the commissioning reflected growing public demand for a new political direction based on competence, courage, compassion and accountability.
“The large turnout of supporters and Nigerians demonstrates that there is a growing desire for a new political direction,” he said.
He said the APM was prepared to mobilise Nigerians around a political platform capable of delivering effective leadership and restoring confidence in the country’s democratic process.
Obi’s attendance has added fresh interest to ongoing efforts by opposition groups to explore possible cooperation, alliances or a single presidential platform ahead of 2027.
While his presence at the APM event does not, on its own, confirm an alliance, it comes amid increasing discussions among opposition figures on how to consolidate their political strength and present a stronger challenge to the APC.
The APM leadership said its campaign would focus on resetting the country’s political and socio-economic direction, with its presidential ticket positioned as the vehicle for achieving that objective.
