A delegation of the National Sports Commission (NSC) and key Nigerian football stakeholders has met FIFA President Gianni Infantino in Zurich, Switzerland, to discuss ongoing reforms and the future direction of Nigerian football.
The meeting on Tuesday followed the recent resignation of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Musa Gusau and members of his executive board, amid mounting pressure over the state of Nigerian football.
The Nigerian delegation was led by NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade. Former NFF President and ex-FIFA Council member Amaju Pinnick was also in attendance.
The discussions focused on the ongoing restructuring of Nigerian football, the recent leadership changes at the NFF and the steps required to move the sport forward.
The engagement comes as Nigeria seeks to implement comprehensive reforms while addressing concerns over football governance and its relationship with FIFA. FIFA has expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding the NFF leadership changes and sought clarification from the Nigerian authorities.
The meeting was described as “very fruitful”, with both sides discussing critical issues concerning the future administration and development of Nigerian football.
The NSC delegation said further details of the reform programme and the next steps would be unveiled soon.
The NFF board led by Gusau resigned on August 27, with the federation subsequently putting its planned September 27 elective congress on hold pending the completion of proposed reforms and consultations with FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
