NIA Inaugurates Agricultural Insurance, Reinsurance Technical Committees

The Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) has inaugurated two new technical committees to strengthen expertise and promote best practices in agricultural insurance and reinsurance.

The new committees are the Agricultural Insurance Technical Committee and the Reinsurance Technical Committee, bringing the total number of NIA technical committees to 16.

Speaking at the inauguration, the NIA Director-General, Mrs Bola Odukale, described the committees as an important platform for advancing the insurance industry.

Odukale said the establishment of the two committees followed calls from members of the Association’s Governing Council and other stakeholders for dedicated bodies to address emerging issues and strengthen professional practice in the two specialised areas.

She said the Agricultural Insurance Technical Committee would promote best practices while improving members’ capacity in underwriting and claims management for agricultural insurance business.

According to her, the Reinsurance Technical Committee would focus on reinsurance matters and practices, as well as enhance the capacity of member companies in reinsurance underwriting and claims management.

“The two new committees were inaugurated in response to calls from Governing Council members and other industry stakeholders for dedicated committees to address emerging issues and reinforce professional practice in these key segments of insurance,” Odukale said.

Members of the committees were also briefed on their roles, responsibilities and expected contributions to the growth of the industry before elections were conducted to establish their leadership structures.

Leonard Okoroafor of AIICO Insurance Plc emerged Chairman of the Agricultural Insurance Technical Committee, while Baron Omiji of Guinea Insurance Plc was elected Deputy Chairman.

Adebayo Olukolajo of Leadway Assurance became Secretary, while Ndidi Nkeonyeasua Olagunju of Industrial and General Insurance (IGI) emerged Assistant Secretary.

For the Reinsurance Technical Committee, Helen Osadunkun of Cornerstone Insurance Plc was elected Chairman, with Ochuko Efenure of Zenith Insurance Plc as Deputy Chairman.

Uwem Offong of NSIA Insurance emerged Secretary, while Otoikhila Godskingdom of Emple Insurance became Assistant Secretary.

The NIA said the inauguration reaffirmed its commitment to building technical capacity, promoting collaboration and strengthening professional standards across the Nigerian insurance industry.

The Association added that the initiative would support the sustainable growth and development of both the NIA and the wider insurance sector.
