Igbo Traders Protest Chinese Retailers in Lagos

Igbo traders at the Lagos Trade Fair Complex staged a protest on Monday, September 14, 2026, against Chinese nationals operating as retailers, accusing them of selling goods at lower prices and taking customers away from local businesses.

- Protesters accuse Chinese retailers of undercutting local traders.
- Traders claim Chinese businesses have shifted from wholesale to retail.
- Protesters demand restrictions on direct retail sales by foreign traders.
- Traders insist the demonstration was peaceful.
- VeryDarkMan criticised the protesters’ position over cheaper goods.
The demonstration took place within the Lagos Trade Fair Complex along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, including areas around ASPANDA. Videos circulating online showed protesters carrying placards with messages including “Chinese must go” and calls for Chinese retailers to leave their market environment.
The protesters argued that Chinese nationals initially entered the Nigerian market mainly as wholesalers but have increasingly moved into direct retail sales. According to the traders, Chinese retailers benefit from access to cheaper imports and stronger supply chains from China, enabling them to sell at prices local retailers struggle to match.
One trader alleged that the development had caused a significant decline in sales.
“If you import goods, they slash their prices lower than our own and sell to our customers. Is this how we would continue? If this continues, five years from now, your shop will be taken away from you,” the trader said in a video.
Traders Insist Protest Was Peaceful
The protesters stressed that the demonstration was peaceful and that they did not intend to attack Chinese nationals or destroy property. Some protesters reportedly told Chinese shop owners that once their existing stock was sold, further imports for retail purposes would not be permitted.
The demonstration has since generated widespread discussion online, particularly over foreign participation in Nigerian retail trade, competition and the protection of local businesses. Community discussion of the protest, including firsthand accounts from traders at the scene, circulated widely on Nairaland shortly after the demonstration.

VeryDarkMan Criticises Protesters
Popular social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has criticised the protesters’ position. VDM has previously campaigned for direct sourcing from Chinese factories, arguing that reducing the number of middlemen can make goods more affordable for Nigerian consumers.
He has also clashed publicly with some Igbo importers over similar issues, maintaining that consumers should benefit from competitive pricing rather than protected profit margins for traders. His reaction has added another dimension to the debate, pitting concerns about the survival of local businesses against arguments for affordable goods and greater competition.
Protest Reignites Debate Over Foreign Retailers
The Lagos protest has highlighted broader tensions surrounding competition between local traders and foreign businesses in Nigeria’s commercial centres. While traders say cheaper foreign-owned retail operations threaten their livelihoods, consumer advocates and other observers may view lower prices as beneficial to buyers.
The debate also raises questions about the rules governing foreign participation in Nigeria’s retail sector and whether existing regulations adequately protect local businesses while allowing healthy market competition. Authorities had yet to issue an official response to the protest as of the time of filing this report.
