The Emir of Gumel in Jigawa State, Alhaji Ahmed Muhammad-Sani II, has died at the age of 85.

The monarch, who spent more than four decades on the throne, reportedly died on Thursday afternoon at a hospital in Egypt, according to an official statement.

His death marks the end of one of the longest reigns among traditional rulers in northern Nigeria.

Ahmed Muhammad-Sani became Emir of Gumel in December 1980, following the death of his father, the then Emir, on December 13 of that year.

Before ascending the throne, the late monarch had a long career in public service and politics.

He attended schools in Gumel, Hadejia and Kano before proceeding to the Institute of Administration in Zaria, where he obtained qualifications in Public Administration.

He later studied Political Science and International Relations at Ohio University in the United States.

He also served with the Nigeria Immigration Service and later worked in public administration.

In 1978, he joined politics and contested for a Senate seat under the Great Nigeria People’s Party. Although he was unsuccessful, he was later appointed Commissioner for Information, Internal Affairs and Culture in the old Kano State.

As commissioner, he was involved in the establishment of The Triumph newspaper and CTV67 television station, now ARTV, as well as the expansion of Radio Kano.

His transition from public service and politics to the traditional institution came suddenly with the death of his father in 1980.

Three days later, on December 16, he was selected to succeed him as Emir of Gumel.

For more than four decades, Emir Ahmed Muhammad-Sani played a major role in the traditional and public life of Gumel and the wider northern region.

His death comes only days after the passing of the Emir of Zurmi in Zamfara State, highlighting a period of transition for traditional institutions in northern Nigeria.

He is survived by family members, while details of his burial and funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the Jigawa State government and the Gumel Emirate Council.
