Switzerland striker Breel Embolo marked his Major League Soccer debut with a late penalty as Atlanta United secured a 2-2 draw against Inter Miami on Saturday.
Embolo, who joined Atlanta from French club Stade Rennais for a reported $18 million fee last month, converted from the spot in the 87th minute, beating Miami goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair to earn his struggling side a valuable point.
The goal was particularly significant for Embolo as it came against an Inter Miami side featuring Argentine stars Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul.
Messi came close to snatching a late winner but saw two efforts blocked by Atlanta defenders as the visitors held on for a share of the points.
Embolo took responsibility for Atlanta’s second penalty after Miguel Almirón had earlier seen his spot-kick saved by St. Clair.

Almirón’s penalty had been awarded following a foul by Casemiro, who endured a mixed outing for Miami.
The Brazil international had given Miami the lead in the 32nd minute, heading home a corner from Messi to score in his second consecutive game.
However, Casemiro was also involved in Atlanta’s equaliser three minutes later when he diverted a cross towards his own goal. Although St. Clair prevented the own goal, Almirón reacted quickest to the rebound to level the score.
Luis Suárez restored Miami’s advantage with his 12th goal of the season, but Atlanta fought back to secure a draw under former Miami manager Gerardo “Tata” Martino.
The match was Messi’s first since announcing his retirement from international football with Argentina. The forward failed to add to the four goals he scored in last week’s 7-1 victory over CF Montreal, although his assist for Casemiro’s opener took his MLS tally to 30 goal contributions this season.
