EFCC Warns Lawyers Against Charging Clients in Foreign Currency — 7 Key Points

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has warned Nigerian lawyers against charging clients in foreign currencies, describing the practice as illegal and unethical.
The warning was issued in Lagos on Friday, September 11, 2026, by the Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC Lagos Zonal Directorate 2, ACE I Bawa Usman Kaltungo, during a meeting with the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Lagos Task Force on Illegal Practice of Law.

1. EFCC warns lawyers against foreign-currency charges
The Commission called on legal practitioners to stop the practice of charging Nigerian clients in foreign currencies.
It described the practice as both illegal and unethical, urging lawyers to comply with applicable regulations governing professional conduct and financial transactions in Nigeria.
2. Warning issued in Lagos
Kaltungo gave the warning on Friday, September 11, during a courtesy visit by members of the NBA Lagos Task Force on Illegal Practice of Law.
The delegation was led by the task force’s Head, Moshood Abiola.
3. EFCC raises concern over illegal practices
The EFCC official expressed concern over the activities of lawyers involved in what he described as illegal and unethical professional practices.
He stressed that members of the legal profession were not exempt from accountability when their activities breached the law.
4. Commission threatens prosecution
Kaltungo warned that the EFCC would not hesitate to prosecute lawyers found culpable of illegal practices.
He said the Commission would take appropriate action against anyone whose conduct falls within its mandate.

5. NBA task force visits EFCC
The meeting followed a courtesy visit by the NBA Lagos Task Force on Illegal Practice of Law to the EFCC’s Lagos Zonal Directorate 2.
The engagement provided an opportunity for both institutions to discuss issues surrounding unlawful practices within the legal profession.
6. EFCC stresses professional responsibility
The Commission’s position places emphasis on the need for legal practitioners to operate within the law and uphold the ethical standards expected of members of the profession.
The warning also signals increased scrutiny of financial practices involving lawyers and their clients.
7. Lawyers urged to comply with Nigerian laws
The EFCC’s message is that legal practitioners must ensure their professional dealings comply with Nigeria’s laws and relevant regulatory requirements.
It warned that professional status would not shield any lawyer found to have engaged in conduct considered unlawful or unethical.
