ASUU declares indefinite strike in LASU, other Lagos varsities 

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Lagos State Government-owned Universities Joint Campus Group, on Tuesday declared a total and indefinite strike across the three state-owned universities in the state.

The affected institutions are the Lagos State University, Lagos State University of Education and Lagos State University of Science and Technology.

The union said the strike followed the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum issued to the state government on August 31, 2026, without a satisfactory resolution or concrete plan from the government.

The declaration was contained in a statement signed by the Coordinator, Steering Committee, ASUU-LASU, Olusegun Babalola; Acting Chairman, ASUU-LASUED, Grace Abimbola; and Chairman, ASUU-LASUSTECH, Murisiku Onigemo.

The union claimed that the action was because the state government allowed the September 13 deadline to lapse without initiating dialogue, despite its final warning on September 10 that “silence is no longer an option.”

It said its principal demand remained the “full domestication and implementation of the December 2025 ASUU-FGN Agreement across all Lagos State-owned universities.”

According to the union, the demand includes the implementation of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and critical welfare provisions for serving and retired academic staff.

The statement read, “Following the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum issued to the Lagos State Government on 31 August 2026, the Academic Staff Union of Universities Joint Campus Group—comprising Lagos State University, Lagos State University of Education, and Lagos State University of Science and Technology—hereby declares a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike action effective immediately.”

ASUU said the strike would remain in force until meaningful engagement produced a satisfactory resolution and the state government signed, domesticated and implemented the applicable provisions of the 2025 agreement in full.

“The Union remains entirely committed to constructive dialogue and to the swift restoration of normal academic activities as soon as these outstanding issues are addressed,” it added.

ASUU said it took the action with a “heavy heart,” urging students and parents to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding while efforts were made to secure a permanent resolution.

It described the action as a “rescue mission for Lagos State education.”

The union further said the strike had the full backing of the ASUU national leadership, adding that the national body had supported the steps taken by the branches, from letters to university administrations, governing councils and the state’s
Visitors, to the issuance of the 14-day ultimatum.

It also called on traditional rulers, religious leaders, alumni associations, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to support its demand.

The Lagos State-owned universities join some other universities that have embarked on strikes, demanding that their state governments commit to implementing the 2025 FGN/ASUU agreement.
